You Know You Need Support—But What Kind?

Maybe you're feeling stuck, disconnected, or emotionally overwhelmed. You’ve read about therapy, heard great things about coaching, and now you’re wondering:

Do I need a therapist—or a coach?

It’s a common question. And the truth is, both therapy and coaching can be life-changing—when aligned with your goals. The key is understanding their purpose, structure, and depth so you can make the best decision for where you are right now.

Therapy vs. Coaching: The Core Difference

Therapy Helps You Heal the Past

Therapy is a clinical, mental health profession focused on helping you process emotions, heal trauma, and regulate your nervous system. It often involves exploring your personal history, family patterns, attachment wounds, and subconscious emotional responses.

Therapists are trained and licensed to work with mental health diagnoses like anxiety, depression, PTSD, or emotional dysregulation. Therapy can go deep—helping you understand why you feel, think, or react the way you do, and offering tools to shift those patterns.

Think of therapy as emotional healing from the inside out.

Coaching Helps You Move Toward the Future

Coaching is a collaborative, goal-oriented process focused on creating clarity, accountability, and forward action. It’s not about diagnosing or healing deep emotional wounds. Instead, coaching helps you identify what you want, what’s blocking you, and how to move from insight into action.

Coaches often work with people who are high-functioning, but stuck—wanting to optimize their relationships, leadership, mindset, or purpose.

Think of coaching as a strategy partner for who you're becoming next.

How to Know Which You Really Need

Here are a few self-reflection questions that can help you decide:

You might benefit most from therapy if:

  • You often feel emotionally flooded or shut down

  • You’ve experienced trauma or attachment wounds

  • You struggle with anxiety, depression, or burnout

  • Your relationships feel chaotic or painful

  • You want a safe space to process, heal, and understand your emotional patterns

You might benefit most from coaching if:

  • You're mentally well, but emotionally stuck or stagnant

  • You’re seeking clarity in your career, goals, or relationship direction

  • You’re ready to take action, but need focus or accountability

  • You want to improve communication, leadership, or emotional intelligence

  • You thrive with structure, planning, and growth-oriented feedback

Can You Do Both?

Absolutely—and many clients do.

In fact, because I’m both a licensed therapist (LMFT) and an ICF-certified coach (PCC), I can help you choose or transition between the two when the time is right. Some clients begin with therapy to heal emotional wounds, and later move into coaching to build their future from a grounded place. Others start with coaching, and discover deeper emotional work is needed to move forward.

The most important thing isn’t choosing the “perfect” modality. It’s choosing to get support that’s aligned with your goals, readiness, and nervous system needs.

How I Integrate Both in My Practice

Through my work at Christine Walter Coaching and Success Source Therapy, I offer:

  • Therapy for Florida-based clients seeking clinical emotional support

  • Coaching for national and international clients seeking personal, relational, or professional growth

  • NeuroEmotional Regulation™ (NER™) and NeuroEmotional Systems Therapy™ (NEST™)—my proprietary methods that blend nervous system science with relational strategy

Whether you need a trauma-informed therapist or a growth-focused coach, I’ll meet you exactly where you are.

Not Sure Where to Start?

Here’s a simple next step:

Final Word: Choose What Honors You Now

You don’t have to figure it all out alone. Whether you’re healing from something painful or reaching for something powerful, the most courageous thing you can do is begin. And you deserve support that fits your nervous system, your relationships, and your goals.
